“The human heart is an
idol factory that takes good things like a successful career, love, material
possessions, even family, and turns them into ultimate things. Our hearts deify
them as the center of our lives, because, we think, they can give us
significance and security, safety and fulfillment, if we attain them.”
– Timothy J. Keller in Counterfeit Gods
I
have a love/hate relationship with Keller’s quote. I love it because it is so very true, but on
the other hand I hate it because it is so very true of my own heart.
As
Mark Driscoll puts it, an idol is a good thing
that
ends up becoming a God thing.
Y’all
I would be lying a big fat lie if I don’t confess that along this adoption process
it has been so hard not to make adoption an idol.
Adoption
is a good thing, a thing that God
loves
but,
it can so easily become an idol.
Between endless hours of paperwork,
months
of home study visits,
fundraising,
saving
every penny,
and
waiting,
and
waiting some more,
and
waiting even more,
I
am often consumed by the process,
longing
to have our little one forever in our arms.
It’s
a daily struggle
one
that I am continually bringing before the Lord.
So weary friends, I want to encourage you
whether you are
waiting for a baby
or longing to be married,
or whatever that idol is,
lay it at the
Father’s feet,
because He is the
only one that can truly satisfy the deepest longings of your soul.

One Response to “When a Good Thing Becomes a God Thing ”
Oh, Leah, your transparency is just beautiful! I will join you in trusting Christ for your baby as you wait on Him!!! I'm so blessed to "meet" you, & so glad Ben was working when I ran in to pick up my glasses. There are no accidents with God!
